Coma Stimulation Therapy

Individuals who are in a coma status upon admission to The Lighthouse will be evaluated by members of the multidisciplinary team and recommendation for therapeutic interventions to provide stimulation during this phase of recovery will be implemented.

The coma stimulation program provides treatment to maintain the resident’s health, skin integrity and neuromuscular status, decreased spasticity, and improve neuromuscular functioning. This is accomplished through a combination of positioning and therapeutic exercise, increased alertness and recognition of people, use of objects and events in the environment for a program of sensory stimulation, and forming a working alliance with family members. The treatment team--which includes caregivers, speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and music therapists--carries out these therapies.

"There is nothing comparable to the feeling of when her client opens their eyes and tracks, speaks a word, or moves an extremity on command for the first time, especially when the hospital/doctors had informed the family they would never wake up."  -- Janelle, OT
