Adaptive Sports

Adaptive sports are often very similar to typical sport activities but they offer modifications for people with a wide range of disabilities and health conditions. Adaptive sports assist in helping people with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges, achieve health benefits through increased involvement in a variety of hobby and sport activities. There have been a multitude of studies that indicate participants of adaptive sports report benefits such as reduced pain, decreased stress, improved emotional well-being and a greater feeling of independence.

The Adaptive sports program at the Lighthouse is a rapidly growing program that is lead by the Recreational Therapy Department. One highlight of the program is, Return to Hunting. A Recreational Therapist, who is a Certified Hunter Safety Instructor with the State of Michigan, helps sportsmen/sportswomen return to their love of hunting that they enjoyed previously to their injury or health complication.  Another exciting addition to the program is adaptive paddling. A Recreational Therapist with the program obtained certification for adaptive kayaking through the American Canoe Association. The course provided for certification is a four day, hands on course that entitles the instructor to become well versed in meeting individual needs and becoming highly skilled in safety related to paddling.
